Biography

Early years (1993–1998)

The band formed in the summertime of 1993 after Palumbo and Beck met each other at camp. Of the band proper name, Beck has said: "Nosotros had a listing of names, and we were just like, permit's pick one of these band names which ones the coolest. At the fourth dimension there were a agglomeration of bands coming out with two names in one like that, similar mouthpiece, curbjaw, stuff like that. We were going downward the list, and the first name that I liked was Swiftkick. I'thou all like, that'southward a sick name. Just for some reason Glassjaw stuck. There's really no reason backside information technology; it but sounded absurd." [six] The band played their first show in 1994 in Oceanside, NY. In the early days, Brook and Weinstock were also playing with Jewish directly border metalcore band, Sons of Abraham. Sons of Abraham constitute an important influence on Glassjaw, songs such as Pain and Shoving (She Should Have Let Me Sleep) by Glassjaw drawing specially on before Sons of Abraham releases. Palumbo was in his own straight-edge band chosen XbustedX. The group's line-upwardly inverse constantly in their early years while they played in the local New York hardcore scene. Brook's primary instrument throughout this time was drums, but switched to bass guitar when Ariel Telford left the band in 1998, so switched to lead guitar when Kris Baldwin left and Manuel Carrero joined the band in 1999. From 1994-1999 the band did several demo recordings of some songs that would somewhen appear on their official releases, likewise as several other compositions that would non see official release. The band recorded the v-vocal Kiss Kiss Bang Bang EP in 1997. The record was released independently on the label 2 Cents a Popular, and saw a re-release in 2001 without label affiliation. The line-upwardly on this record was Daryl Palumbo, Justin Brook, Todd Weinstock, Kris Baldwin and Ariel Telford. "Star Above My Bed", from the EP, is nonetheless in the band's set lists to this day. A significant recording came in 1999 working with Don Fury (Quicksand, Snapcase, Orange 9mm), showcasing songs that appeared on their debut LP Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence (1999–2000)

In 1999, the band entered the studio at Indigo Ranch in Malibu, California with producer Ross Robinson (At the Drive-In, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, among others) to tape their first total-length album entitled Everything You Ever Wanted to Know Almost Silence, which saw release in 2000 through Roadrunner Records. On being signed: "Ross showed upwardly at a practice," Beck recounts. "We commencement a song; 5-iv-3-2-ane. Ross stands up, waving his easily and he'southward like, 'It's over, it's done. I want to do this, you've got a deal!' [7] The line-up on this record was Palumbo, Beck, Todd Weinstock, Manuel Carrero & Sammy Siegler (who left the band prior to the subsequent tour). Robinson has said of information technology: "Our goal at the time of that record was to destroy Adidas rock", [8] a self-deprecating reference to the Adidas-sponsored bands (Korn, Limp Bizkit) Robinson had produced and championed every bit part of the nu-metal motion. [9] The music was aggressive and unrelenting, merely also included spacious songs like "When 1 Eight Becomes Two Zeros", "Her Middle Name is Smash", "Pianoforte" and the ballsy "Everything You lot Ever Wanted to Know About Silence", the latter of which deals with Palumbo's problems with Crohn's disease. [7] The music, accompanied with Palumbo's lyrics—which were oft bitter and resentful towards particular characters he was discussing—and his singing way in itself—powerful and aggressive guttural screaming along with a melodic impact—created a unique dynamic. Although EYEWTKAS is ofttimes cited as a milestone post-hardcore album, it saw little push from Roadrunner, causing the band to garner an sick-will towards the characterization. Matters were somewhat worsened when Palumbo started to have bouts with his Crohn's disease on tour, as his aggressive performance style sometimes triggers a relapse, which has the potential to be fatal. Information technology is alleged that Roadrunner would not allow Palumbo to leave the bout to rest.

Larry Gorman of Orange 9mm officially took over drumming duties office-way through touring, which saw dates with Deftones and a half-dozen-calendar week European tour with Soulfly. [10] The line-up continued to rotate following the decision of the tour when Manuel Carrero was kicked out past Roadrunner for being the only member to accept date conflicts with touring.

The anthology will be pressed on vinyl for 2009, limited to 10,000 copies. [11]

Worship and Tribute (2001–2003)

In 2001, the ring entered the studio in secret with Ross Robinson and began recording their follow-up album Worship and Tribute, which would run across release the following year. The album was engineered and mixed by Mike Fraser. They left Roadrunner, finding them problematic, and shipped the anthology to other labels and ended upward signing a deal with Warner Bros. Records. The line-upwards on this tape was Palumbo, Beck (who also provided bass duties), Weinstock, and Shannon Larkin of Amen and subsequently Godsmack, who provided drumming duties due to recording time constraints, every bit he had worked well with producer Ross Robinson in the past, although Larry Gorman was composing parts and officially the drummer of the band. Ross Robinson does not employ a 'click track' (automated metronome) when recording drummers, as he believes "it takes abroad from the true essence of the music". This album showcased a more melodic and mature Glassjaw, as they started to further comprise jazz and ambient influences, peculiarly in tracks like "Ape Dos Mil", "Must've Run All Day", "The Gillette Cavalcade of Sports", and "Convectuoso" (which did not appear on the official release due to a publishing dispute with Roadrunner). Palumbo said of it: "It's a mélange of influences, a collage is what this band is all nigh. This record pays tribute to everything from Bad Brains to Anthrax to The Cure to Squeeze and so much more." [eight] Lyrically, the more confrontational elements heard on 'Everything...' were reined in, with Palumbo taking a more cerebral approach.

Dave Allen joined the group as bassist following the recording of the album. The ring and then toured extensively throughout 2002-2003, playing all over the world, including festival tours such every bit Warped Tour, Ozzfest and Snocore. In Oct 2002, dates in Germany and the Great britain were cancelled when Palumbo was hospitalized in Paris after suffering a relapse of the Crohn's; he underwent intestinal surgery. [12] [thirteen] The dates were rescheduled to Dec, only he suffered another relapse. On their return in April 2003 he was hospitalized again in Glasgow, Scotland, which led to cancellations including the Kerrang! Weekender and a date at the London Astoria. [14] [15]

Hiatus and rebirth (2004–2008)

The ring took a hiatus in 2004, while Palumbo was composing and performing with his new group Head Automatica -- which included drummer Larry Gorman—and Brook worked on his band merchandise business concern. In late 2004, Todd Weinstock, Dave Allen, and Larry Gorman were all fired from the band, fueling rumors that they had carve up up. [16] Indeed, the band's website displayed "RIP GlassJAw" in the header for a time, though this may have been in jest. [16] The band denied that they were splitting up and cited Palumbo's ongoing problems with Crohn'southward Disease as one of the reasons for the hiatus. [17]

After a two-year hiatus, the band played three shows in 2005; two at The Downtown in Farmingdale, New York, with gain going to clemency, and a spot on The Used's bout at the Hammerstein Ballroom. They were initially meant to exist principal tour back up for The Used, but Palumbo had farther problems with his Crohn's (Head Automatica also cancelled all their US shows). [eighteen] Manuel Carrero, who had been playing with a band named The Jiant, replaced Allen as bassist after near five years abroad from the group. Durijah Lang, who was also a former ring member from their early on years, replaced Larry Gorman behind the kit. The band did non fill its vacant guitarist role and connected as a four-piece.

In October 2005 the band released a B-side EP of songs not used on Worship and Tribute, entitled El Mark. Their official website became agile once again in Nov 2006. The band would go along to tour in Dec of that year as support for Deftones, [19] and a few headlining shows of their own (dubbed the Fucking Tour 2006 [twenty] ). Palumbo said, 'The best thing about the bout was only having it happen'. [21] Besides, on New year's Eve of 2006, they played at two-day festival Stillborn Fest in Connecticut, alongside Hatebreed and others. [22] Along with new cloth was the confirmation that a new album would be released in 2007, with the new songs introduced at the shows included.

Glassjaw's official site homepage showed "7.7.7." in large assuming text, referring to a one-off show at the Carling Academy Brixton in England. Information technology was then announced on fan site Glassjaw.cyberspace that they would be playing a warm up show at the Camden Barfly on vi.seven.7. These shows were the first in the United kingdom for four years. At the finish of 2007, Glassjaw for the first fourth dimension headlined in southern California in various venues such as the Avalon in Hollywood, the House of Dejection in San Diego, and the Glasshouse in Pomona. [23] This was dubbed the "100% Perchance" tour, a joke referring to the uncertain nature of their tours due to frequent cancellations. The band was i of the headlining acts of 2007's Saints & Sinners Festival at the Asbury Park Convention Hall in Asbury Park, New Jersey, along with Against Me!.

Around this time, the songs on Glassjaw's MySpace music actor were taken off, and a track called "Yum Yum" (which was a loop from the verse drum track of the 2010 unmarried "Natural Born Farmer") was put upwardly. [24] The runway was a loop of a distorted drumline, withal the last few seconds featured undistorted drumming. Six days later on, this runway was removed and replaced with a track called "Last Lisp". Unlike "Yum Yum", it is a looped bassline with no sample at the stop. These were snippets from the recording process for the next anthology.

In 2008, Glassjaw returned to the UK, playing at the two-day festival Give It A Proper noun in Sheffield on May ten, and in London on May 11. They as well did shows in Cardiff, Wales, and Dublin, Ireland.

Our Color Light-green Singles / Coloring Book EP / New LP

Glassjaw'due south next album is highly predictable, non only due to their terminal total-length release dating back to 2002, but besides the delay and lack of information regarding its status and/or release. In an interview with Palumbo in the July 2006 upshot of AP magazine, he stated that the band were in the procedure of writing and recording new material for the next anthology, which they hoped to release in 2007. Palumbo hinted that in that location could be a unifying concept behind the album. In November 2007, in the start Glassjaw interview in years, Beck revealed they had written "about eleven good songs -- seven i love, and four to half-dozen one-half-baked ideas we need to finish". [4] In an interview with Kerrang!, Palumbo stated that the new anthology should be released by "The stop of this yr or early 2009...I hope." Details emerged from The Grixer in May 2008 that the album was "awaiting vocals" and "should be wrapped up and completed in the coming months". [25] In a May 2008 interview with Verse Ane magazine, Beck said: "Right now I'd just be happy to finish upwardly this record. I'm sure if it's not a giant pile of shit, we'd love to play information technology alive. Exact dates, plans, don't know yet." [26] In a June 2008 interview conducted by Glassjaw.cyberspace, Beck stated, "As far equally I am personally concerned, there will exist a release well before the end of the year." [27]

The album is not beingness produced by Ross Robinson, every bit with previous releases; Beck is co-producing the anthology with his friend Jonathan Florencio. Jonathan Florencio is as well engineering the album. [4] [26] [27] Drum, bass, and guitar parts of 13 songs accept been tracked, [27] but Palumbo has yet to finish the vocals. Vocals have been recorded for "(You Think Yous're) John Fucking Lennon", "Jesus Glue", the reworked "Star Above My Bed" (based on the Osculation Osculation Bang Bang and not Don Fury version), and "Natural Born Farmer", [28] all of which have been played live and which are expected to be included on the album; [29] withal, tracks "Convectuoso" and "Midwestern Stylings" were not included on Worship and Tribute, despite media reports and announcements at alive shows. [ten] A fifth, unnamed track has only freestyle vocals recorded, [28] perhaps indicating that lyrics have even so to be written for the rest of the album. It has been rumored that the album will be self-titled, and Brook has hinted, though speculatively, at a possible digital release. [27] He has also said he would like to release the record himself, but it is likely information technology volition exist released past Warner Bros., equally with Worship and Tribute. [28]

Fans speculate the album will not see a release until 2010: Palumbo was finishing up Caput Automatica's third album, House of Blow's debut EP, and product on Cage Kennylz's Depart From Me, likewise as beingness involved in various other projects. At one betoken, rumors of Palumbo's sick health surfaced, with speculation of further postponement until he had recovered. When released, it should be noted that it will be the showtime Glassjaw release not to feature Todd Weinstock since early demos from 1995.

On October 14, 2008 bassist Manuel Carrero wrote on the Glassjaw.net forum: "I experience similar a child that's been asked to clean his room, merely the room still isn't clean, and every time the kid peeks out of the room, he is immediately asked if information technology'due south finished. (And I've already cleaned my section of the room.) I wish I had an answer for everyone, but I am pretty much in the dark. I mean, let'south exist frank, here. I just play the bass. I have no delusions about my role. I take no control of what happens with the band. I would beloved to tell you that the record is done. I would dear to tell yous when or if we are going to bout over again. The sad truth is, I simply don't know. I don't know if anyone knows." [thirty] [31]

On Oct 23, 2008 Tommy Corrigan of Silent Bulk revealed he had heard recorded songs from the album, and that "it had a latin/spanish music experience to some songs [...] they were [...] HEAVILY groove/experience oriented". [32] [33] This has been affirmed in an October 29, 2008 interview with Beck, which also states the anthology has a split style, with the five songs featuring vocals sounding much unlike the residual of the album (indeed, four of these songs were played alive every bit early on as 2003, and possibly written in the previous year). [28]

On November 22, 2008 the ring posted the pulsate intro to "(You lot Think Yous're) John Fucking Lennon" on their MySpace folio, naming it 'It's A Fucking Intro You lot Asshole' for the album 'Don't Ask Me' with release appointment '2022'. [34] [35] On November 28, 2008 the band posted the total studio-recorded version of "(You Remember You're) John Fucking Lennon" on their website as a subconscious stream. [36] [37] They removed all usual site textile and links, replacing it with a Glassjaw flag backdrop (a dark-green variant of the Puerto Rican flag), which linked to the ring's official clothing line.

Equally of March 5, 2009, Manny replied on the glassjaw.internet forums in regards to an article from Absolutepunk.net that reported "all simply four songs are done"; "Merely so the thread doesn't keep with more speculation, I will say now that I was misquoted. I said that but iv songs, (ones that we have been playing alive with this lineup), have vocals, but that's erstwhile news, anyway. I tin't actually hash out any more than than that. I probably shouldn't take even discussed that." Manny has recently[ when? ] been playing shows with influential New Bailiwick of jersey post-hardcore band Thursday. Although consensus is that Manny is but filling in for Th's bassist and has no plans to join the band or get out Glassjaw, this has still sparked considerable discussion amongst fans.

In May, Palumbo stated through his Twitter that he was demoing vocals on new songs, and that fans should be hearing new music "rather before long." In a post fabricated on his Twitter on June fourteen, Palumbo said, "Beck and I are sitting in his automobile listening to the new Glassjaw EP that we've just completed. Shit SLAMS." It is unclear whether the EP is meant to exist a promo for a full-length album, or if it will exist the terminal Glassjaw release. EDIT: This has now been confirmed past Daryl himself that the EP is a promo for a full-length album via Twitter on June 23, in which snatcher2047 asked "But read your interview. Are y'all proverb in that location's gonna be a Glassjaw Anthology to follow the EP???" Daryl replied, "snatcher2047 of course.".

On July 20, Palumbo confirmed through Defection that at that place volition be a new Glassjaw EP and LP to be released in the coming months. He was quoted as saying "Information technology's a five- or six-vocal EP, and the EP volition be slightly different from the full-length. The new Glassjaw stuff is far more than aggressive than it was previously. This is stuff that Justin (Brook) and I have been working on for a long time. Information technology's far more ambitious than I ever idea it would be." [38]

In the Autumn of 2009, Glassjaw supported Brand New in their upcoming bout. [39] Non long afterwards, Palumbo, Beck and Manny conducted an sectional video interview for Glassjaw.net on Ryan'due south Stone Show, where the ring stated that the long absence of released fabric was due to "decisions we made when nosotros were 21 years old", alluding to a possible legal/contractual dispute with either Roadrunner or most probable with their previous/current label, Warner Bros. [xl]

In December 2009, it was announced that Manuel Carrero and Durijah Lang left Saves the 24-hour interval in club to focus entirely on Glassjaw. [41] This fabricated information technology clear that both Carrero and Lang are not just hired touring musicians and are full time members.

In January 2010, Glassjaw debuted a new song, titled "All Skillful Junkies Go To Heaven" live on their UK bout. The song was titled past Daryl Palumbo via Twitter some months before. This is the kickoff new vocal Glassjaw has played in nearly four years ("Lennon", "Jesus Glue" were debuted belatedly 2006). In addition, the ring also added "El Marker" and "Convectuoso" to their setlists, two fan-favorite b-sides that are nearly never played alive. On the last show of their 2010 tour at Emo's in Austin, TX, the ring premiered a new song with the tentative title "Wolfegg". On June 17 Chauncey from Cardboard City posted a motion-picture show on his Twitter of a CD-R which is labeled to be the new Glassjaw EP with a tweet following proverb "Information technology sounds cliché and all the bands say information technology BUT the "Heavy" is truly heavier & the melodic stuff is more beautiful than ever. ViVa Glassjaw!!!" and "Don't exist too jealous GJ fans cuz this shit is gonna be out sooner than y'all know it and is VERY much so worth the expect. You'll beloved it!!!" [42] In Baronial 2010 they will return to the U.k. to headline the Hevy Music Festival held at the Port Lympne Wild Animal Park nigh Folkestone.

On Baronial 6–8, 2010, the ring released a vii" vinyl single for "All Practiced Junkies Go to Heaven" spraypainted green and pink on either side of the vinyl at the U.k.'s Hevy Fest. This is the first official Glassjaw release since 2005'southward El Mark EP. On August viii, 2010 via MerchDirect, "All Skillful Junkies Go To Heaven" became available for buy. Within hours of availability, the vinyl had sold out. Shortly thereafter, in addition to the launch of the single, a "i-have" live video of their 2008 song "Y'all Recall You lot're John Fucking Lennon" was posted on the official Glassjaw website. [43] On September 8, Glassjaw announced the release of another vinyl single for release on September ix, 2010 for the song "Jesus Glue", likewise as a digital download for "All Proficient Junkies Go To Heaven" in various formats. On September 23, GlassJaw posted a video for the song, "Stars," a reworked version of "Star Above my Bed," a fan favorite. [44] As they did with "Junkies" and "Jesus Glue", October 10 saw the release of nevertheless another vinyl, "Natural Born Farmer" and the digital release of "Jesus Glue". November 11, 2010 was the date of a Glassjaw pizza political party at Mario'due south Pizzeria in Seaford, New York City. The event began at 1:11pm and a 7" vinyl for the song "Stars" was bachelor for purchase. Lucky buyers also received a complimentary ticket to participate in a secret fan-shot video shoot for "Wolfegg" (at present with the official title "Black Nurse") at 11:11pm at MerchDirect HQ. Glassjaw's MerchDirect store crashed several times on eleven/11/10 at 11:11am and 1:11pm due to high volume. Way and influences

Glassjaw's sound has changed over the form of their history, consisting of the genres; post-hardcore, alternative stone, alternative metal, experimental rock, progressive rock, screamo with afro-beat and jazz mixtures, and past works every bit rapcore, nu-metallic and hardcore punk. They have cited a various and wide range of influences; because of this, categorization is difficult. The band's sound has, however, always been rooted in the New York hardcore (punk) scene, with Bad Brains being a key influence. Elements of the late 1980s Youth Crew manner of hardcore are prominent in their earlier recordings, and Youth Of Today take been cited equally an of import influence. [6] Brook has cited Religion No More'due south attitude towards making music as an influence, [6] while Palumbo has specifically cited Mike Patton as a huge influence on him. [47]

Influences which the band have listed include: Bad Brains, Organized religion No More, Mr Boggle, Anthrax, Jane's Addiction, Squeeze, The Cure, The Smiths, Depeche Way, Quicksand, Nation of Ulysses, Heroin, Dice 116, Orange 9mm, Burn, Youth Of Today, Gorilla Biscuits and Vision Of Disorder.[ citation needed ]

Problems with Roadrunner Records

Both Palumbo and Beck continue to speak unfavourably of Roadrunner, years after the issues the band experienced with them. They openly advise people not to buy their first full-length so as not to give the characterization money, and accept repeatedly told fans at shows to illegally download the tape. [27] Palumbo has said of them: "Roadrunner is a joke. Roadrunner's not even a real label. It has the ability to be one of the superpowers in the heavy music manufacture. While labels like Victory Records, which is such a pocket-sized hardcore label, is totally surpassing Roadrunner. Roadrunner is a joke. Its like the scourge of the music industry. [47] Beck has said: "Seriously, don't e'er support anything from Roadrunner -- they suck!" [48] Palumbo has said that Roadrunner didn't put the band on plenty tours: "We never toured half every bit much as we wanted to, I just wish nosotros got to bout more in support of [EYEWTKAS]"; and "We were on Roadrunner for a couple of years and Roadrunner was a joke, a fuckin' joke of a label. They are a miserable fuckin' corporation that does not curve for their bands, does not requite their bands anything and they're just terrible businessmen. They are a giant joke of a label. They had two cash cows, Slipknot and Nickelback, and every other projection they had rode backseat to those bands, and then the second that the new Slipknot record came out and didn't become quadruple Platinum in the showtime few hours it was released they fuckin' turned their backs on Slipknot. That label but wants instant gratification where it sells its units and that'due south a joke. Y'all can't run a major corporation with that every bit your business strategy". [ix]

In regards to the re-release of the remastered version of EYEWTKAS on March 2009 by Roadrunner, Beck was quoted past Alter The Printing! in saying "It's complete shit! We had cypher to practise with it. DO Non Buy It! It's embarrassing." [49]
